Overview

This course is designed for geriatric care providers in the inpatient and outpatient setting. Topics include the recognition of the implications of aging on opioid administration, strategies for acute and chronic pain management that  include plans of care that balance the risk of side effects with improvement in the quality of life, and opioid-related complications and overdose in the geriatric population.

This course, powered by QuizTime, consists of 10 questions delivered once per weekday so it will take approximately 2 weeks to complete. Each question allows for 1 reattempt if your first attempt is not correct, and each question expires 48 hours after it is sent. Before the conclusion of the course, you will receive an email containing any questions you have not attempted, and you will have 48 hours from the time the email is sent as a last chance for answering those questions. Upon completion of this course, you will receive a numeric credit code and instructions for texting that to our credit system to claim your credits.

Learning Objectives

  1. Recognize the implications of aging on opioid administration and subsequent choice of analgesic medication, dosage, and duration of therapy.
  2. Describe the risks of opioid prescription in the elderly alongside strategies to minimize the associated harm.
  3. Formulate plans of care that balance the risk of side effects and complications due to opioids and other analgesics with improvements in quality of life and functional status from adequate analgesia.
  4. Explain the prevalence of opioid-related complications, including diversion and overdose in the geriatric population and discuss potential solutions.
